Laminate Flooring
In 1995-2000, the carpet industry became very concerned with this flooring product and began extensive laminate floor testing to find flaws in the product in order to sell against the new flooring product. Almost every carpet testing lab in the Dalton was involved in some type of laminate floor testing. What they found was a complete surprise and rather than finding weaknesses in the product, many carpet manufacturers built their own laminate flooring manufacturing facilities and began producing their own laminate floor line. Laminate flooring was originally developed in Sweden in 1982 as possible use of high-pressure melamine laminate. The original product was developed several layers of paper impregnated with special resins. These layers were pressed together under high pressure into a highly wear resistant composite material. A decorative paper top layer was attached to apply the design. This laminate was then glued onto a base and cut into sections with high tolerance dimensions. During this period laminate was a product that was used on kitchen countertops, tables or wall paneling, but no flooring material was manufactured. Initially the primary concern was related to wear factors, since flooring materials are subjected to extreme abuse. While completely serviceable for walls or counter tops, flooring is subjected to more than 10 times the abuse that these material receive. As research continued, the strength of flooring laminate increased dramatically to exceed the strength of countertops. The perfection of laminate flooring opened the door for carpet manufacturers to introduce a do-it-yourself installation product, and the rapid growth of this market has encourage carpet manufactures to examine other do-it-yourself options in carpet. Do-it-yourself carpet tile is quickly becoming popular for residential customers. In the past, carpet tiles were reserved for commercial carpet installations, but the highly successful entry of DIY laminate flooring for consumers has created a market (DIY) that much of the carpet industry had overlooked.
